If you'd ask me if I'd travel all the roads, log all the miles, hop on all the flights, all the sleepless nights, all the surgeries, all the injuries, the metal rods in my teeth, all of it.

Edge was successful that night, managing to retain his title, but little did the WWE Universe know that everything was about to change. Standing in front of a packed out arena on the following RAW, Edge announced that he had to retire from WWE due to severe neck issues that could have paralysed him or even cost him his life.

In one of the most emotional and moving segments in RAW history, the then year-old revealed all to those in attendance and the millions watching around the world.

He opened up and cut an emotional figure as he seemingly ended his professional wrestling career, going out on top as the World Heavyweight Champion. Edge addressed all the issues that had hampered him during his career, and admitted that he was starting to feel numbness in his arms. He then went on to reveal that he passed basic-strength tests prior to 'Mania, but was then sent by WWE for further testing. That is when an MRI result forced him to retire. There was a serious chance if he continued to wrestle, he would suffer paralysis from the neck down, or even worse, lose his life.

You remember the emotion you felt, and you remember just how hard it hit you. His own emotion outpoured during the segment and it was visible for all to see just how badly it was hurting him that he had to retire and go out not on his terms. Yes it's scripted, but the bumps and the spots are real. Not a few months off for surgery or a year off to recover, but no more wrestling ever again. Well, for nine years in hindsight, but at the time Edge believed he was done for good.

The speech was so heartfelt that it landed Edge a role on the TV show Vikings. Extreme Rules took place a month later, allowing for the rematch to be no DQ affair. Del Rio could have won, allowing Edge to then take some deserved time off. That stole headlines after Punk beat Cena for the title at Money in the Bank and left with the championship. Desperate for a way to not only tempt Punk to return but also get his title back where it belongs, Vince McMahon calls upon Edge who has been absent since losing to Del Rio.

Cue an extended rivalry between the two with Punk at his peak. Punk wins, but the two of them continue to have main events matches at PPVs through the next couple of months. Edge becomes a time champion but loses the championship back to Punk at Vengeance. The following year, Edge would be honored for his contributions to professional wrestling when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of Appropriately enough, it was Christian that inducted him.

Up until this point, they were all done without physicality. No stranger to his performances being interrupted, Elias was irate when Edge made a surprise appearance.

The Ontario native soaked in the raucous response from the fans in attendance. Edge entered the ring and suddenly dropped Elias with his trademark Spear.

Though Edge routinely shot down the possibility of returning to the ring, this moment did nothing but stoke the flames among fans. They would simply have to wait a few more months. Rampant speculation would finally be confirmed at the Royal Rumble event. Grizzled and determined, Edge had a new lease on life, from a career standpoint, and he was determined to make the most of it.

During the match, however, Edge sustained a legitimate triceps tear, which kept him out of the ring for the rest of the year. However, he vowed that he would return. When he did, he would do so with greater purpose.
