Subject says goodbye to older son leaving for school. Subject turns on laptop and sits on sofa in pajamas. Subject lets cat out. Subject lets cat in. Really fast typing. Subject makes toast. Subject eats toast while rereading article in local paper about rural UFO cult.
Subject puts extra pair of socks on over extant pair of socks. Re-creating deleted text almost verbatim from memory. Intense self-doubt. Subject showers, dresses including two new pairs of socks.
Bathroom break. Frenetic typing accompanied by quiet sinister chuckling. Subject saves file, turns off computer, makes sandwich. Most copywriters take the traditional route of attending college. It takes years to become a professional grant writer that earns a full-time income. Many employers require at least 2 years of grant writing education and experience in the industry.
Depending on your education and experience, you can land a grant writing job in 3 years. Personally, I wrote grants for 10 years for a nonprofit. It took me at least three years to feel comfortable writing grants, even though I had the benefit of one-on-one mentorship with a veteran grant writer. Most video game companies want writers who are familiar with both writing and at least basic coding.
The vast majority of policy writers work for the federal government, but some work for other public and private organizations. Either way, a deep understanding of pubic policies, associated laws, and writing is mandatory. If I had to start over from zero with no experience, these are the three things I would do to become a writer even faster:. I wasted years trying to learn to blog on my own. As soon as I took my first blogging course, I started getting results.
My all-time favorite blogging course is Passive Income Geek , which is how I learned to build multiple websites and actually earn a living from blogging. Writing courses are great for learning the basics quickly, but your mentor can help you master more advanced topics that take years to learn on your own. By 11 AM the rest of the world is fully awake and so the day goes downhill from there. That way no-one interrupts you for five hours, in which time you can get a huge amount of work done. I averaged 5, words a day for days straight writing Churchill: Walking with Destiny. I have found that I am most productive if I start early.
Doing this allows me to stay consistent—even if I have a 9AM meeting or a class to teach later in the day, I always manage to get some writing done.
For the most part, I am able to maintain this routine. There are a whole bunch of reasons. So I really protect that early morning time. The gym is that for me. I never want to get out of bed. I HATE the idea of getting up and going to work out. I feel virtuous. This last part being particularly important. I need to be alone to write fiction, for I am a fragile flower — and the more utterly alone I am, the better. In the middle of the night, there are no distractions. Nobody is up. To rejuvenate.
So when I am fully rejuvenated, I write. Especially in New York City, I write best in the early morning or late night and I find the energy is too distracting to write during the daytime unless there is major breaking news on deadline.
But when the city is asleep, you can focus for sustained periods of time.
